Background

I first ventured into my UX journey starting with the Google UX Design Certificate Course. The goal of this project was to create a mobile ordering app for my parent’s bakery. Although I’m still in the junior stages of my UX journey, I decided to redesign my first UX project to reflect the progress I’ve made since then.

The Problem

Venice Bakery's app required a redesign because the previous design did not fit well with the client’s needs. By specifying the goals and business needs of the client, it provided me with a clearer understanding of who and what I was designing for.

Optimizing the app

Removing unnecessary features
Previously, there was a feature allowing customers to order for delivery. Since the client only offers deliveries on specific occasions, this feature was removed.

Pick-up times

According to the client, customers tend to place orders a week in advance. Therefore, the pick-up date selection has now been redesigned and optimized for a better user experience.
The previous time picker did not reflect the business’s opening hours. It also failed to specify whether the time chosen was in AM or PM. The new design gives customers to choose from hourly intervals and also provides the option to edit the date they selected previously if users made a mistake.

Elevating the browsing experience

Accessing the shopping cart

Users expressed a need to be able to edit their cart prior to checking out. Categories were created so that users could sort through certain items efficiently.

Elevating the browsing experience

Most bakeries usually offer a wide range of products such as pastries, cakes, seasonal items, and more. As there was no way of grouping the items, it became hard for users to sort through them to find what they needed. A shopping cart icon was also added so users can access their carts and checkout.

Optimizing app features

The checkout process

When beginning to checkout, an option to edit the order was unavailable. This is an important feature because customers may make last minute decisions. The new checkout page allows for users to edit the quantities of their items and gives them the option to delete as well.

Speeding up the checkout process

On the checkout screen, the preselected date and time should be added to reassure users. Having this in the confirmation page prior to confirming the order can make sure that users have selected the correct date that they wish to pick the items up.This builds trust with the users and provides them with more confidence in their decision.

Eliminating unnecessary information

When users edit their profile, text fields are present for them to enter their name, phone number, and address. Since this information isn’t essential when it comes to pick-ups the text fields were removed and replaced with a customer’s past orders instead. Therefore they’d be able to reorder items from previous orders with the simple click of a button.
